Raw Photographs

Raw Photographs

1. What is a RAW image?

2. What image type allows a photo to be previewed on a camera's screen?

3. Give some benefits of shooting RAW rather than JPEG.

1. Raw photographs include more data than a JPEG or PNG (for example), it is NOT compressed, this is usually a proprietary format, e.g. the Nikon Electric Format or NEF, these store exact "RAW" data directly from the sensors, they are lossless and allow adjustment of certain parameters e.g. White Balance.

2. JPEG Files can be viewed on cameras and also other devices

3. Benefits to RAW photos is that they are lossless, uncompressed and allow you to adjust the white balance and exposure to an extent.

Exposure

1. What is under exposure?

The image does not have enough light for what you are doing, exposure amounts are subjective as you may want to to a longer exposure,

2. What is over exposure?

Over exposed images are too bright for what you are doing, they show flushed colours in mostly white colours and they sometimes show less detail due to overexposure.

3. Mac: Comand + 0 to activate Histogram, more peaks at the top (right) of the histogram, vice versa for low exposure, for an optimal exposure, there are majority peaks in the centre
